Weekly Report
Nancy Mclain - District 3
Arizona House of Representatives

March 5 , 2006
Sorry I missed my update last week.  I was in Los Angeles on business over the weekend and just never got caught up when I returned.

You have probably read in the paper that the Governor is letting our most recent English Language Learner (ELL) proposal go to the judge.  She still doesn't approve of our plan and won't sign off on it, but without a veto it automatically is final after five days.  We believe this is a good plan that provides a sound basis for determining what should be spent on ELL and are confident that the judge will agree.  If not, appeals are planned that might ultimately get us out from under the court order.

I had a busy Saturday with Sen. Jon Kyl, his wife and their granddaughter.  Laughlin Ranch was kind enough to pick up their party, including staff and me, at the Laughlin/Bullhead airport.  After a short tour of the property, the restaurant and pro shop, Sen. Kyl was greeted by about 50 Bullhead City residents gathered for brunch and remarks from the Senator.  He spoke of the need to get all of the new residents of our area registered to vote in Arizona and how he was depending on all of us to help in his re-election campaign.  His answers to questions from the audience were concise, well thought out and to the point.  Many thanks to Orchid Comitz and all the staff at Laughlin Ranch for a wonderful event.

I was able to join Senator Kyl for the short plane ride to Lake Havasu City for District 3's Lincoln Day Lunch, where he was greeted by another enthusiastic Republican audience.  His remarks were again well received.  The Senator and party returned to Phoenix and I hitched a ride back to Bullhead City with Ray and Sue Lackey.  A long, but very enjoyable day.

Both of my bills passed Appropriations last week, again unanimously.  They will be in Committee of the Whole this coming week, then go for Third Reading (the final and recorded vote).  I'm expecting passage in the House, but will have some work to do to make sure they get out of the Senate.  I'm ready!

Until next week,

Nancy
