Weekly Report |
January 30, 2006
Not a very long one this week:
As I sure most of you have read, the majority
of our time last week was spent wrangling about the
ELL program. It is still our contention that
the legislature has done what was required; i.e.,
come up with a comprehensive plan to effectively
teach students English. The fact that the Governor
vetoed our plans twice does not negate the fact that
they passed both the House and Senate. The
Governor has decided that she can determine in advance
what will or will not be acceptable to the judge
in this case. Obviously, we're not through
with this yet -- we'll see what this week brings.
In the meantime, we did pay a substantial pay
raise for state employees. It wasn't the 9.5%
that their union had requeste, but it was an average
of 6.5% for most. Leadership decided that it
would be better for the original bill's sponsor to
present the amendment that I spoke of last week,
so I didn't have the opportunity to present it under
my name. But it was passed, and that's the
important part.
I was in Bullhead City for about 24 hours this
weekend, which allowed time only to try and catch
up on my business and get the laundry done! Next
weekend I'll be home for three days, with two appearances
scheduled. Don't forget that I'll be in Meadview
at 10:00 am Friday and at the Republican Forum om
BHC on Saturday morning at 9:30.
Until next week,
Nancy
