HCM2003 REVISITED
Some of you may recall that my "NO" vote on HCM2003 (Opposing a North
American Union) created quite a stir among some of the residents of District
3. By voting against this meaningless resolution, these folks thought I
was voting in favor of forming such a union. Of course, that was not the
point; but there was no convincing them that I had a rational reason for my vote.
Despite my vote and that of several other Republicans, it did pass and was sent
to the Senate. There, the language was changed, removing some of the more
radical statements, and finally returned to the House for Final Passage. After
much internal debate, I voted "Yes" on the final version. Even
though I am still against the majority of these "postcards to Congress" for
reasons I have previously stated, I felt that a favorable vote was the only way
to prove that I am not, in fact, supporting anything resembling a North American
Union.
I will continue to vote against HCMs unless I believe they are directly connected
to Arizona and will provide a benefit to our residents. (And I suppose
I have to be sure to say our "legal residents.")
During the four years I have represented District 3, there must have been 20-30
bills dealing with illegal immigration in one form or another. I have voted
against one of them (two if you include this HCM, which did not deal directly
with that subject), and still I am labeled "soft" on illegals. With
some, unless you toe their line 100% you become an enemy to be defeated. I
don't believe the majority of my constituents share that view.
Until next week,
Nancy
